Continued financial support from SRC and NIST as part of NRI 2.0 will enable CNSE’S INDEX Institute to accelerate innovations for the next decade and beyond

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) will receive $8.3 million in funding from the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to support CNSE’s Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery and Exploration (INDEX) in the second phase of the national Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI), a five-year program that targets the development of next-generation computer chip technologies. This funding will support Governor Cuomo’s innovation-driven strategy to establish New York as a home for world-class nanotechnology research and high-impact economic growth.
“This funding from the Semiconductor Research Corporation and National Institute of Standards and Technology will provide significant support to keep New York State at the forefront of the nanotechnology industry,” Governor Cuomo said. “We are proud to house the INDEX Institute at the NanoCollege where we are investing in cutting-edge innovation and research to develop the next generation of technologies right here in New York. Headquartered at CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex and spearheaded by CNSE, the INDEX Institute includes research partners from a variety of universities, including Columbia University, Cornell University, Purdue University, Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Virginia, among others. In addition, corporate researchers from leading nanoelectronics companies such as Intel, IBM and GLOBALFOUNDRIES participate in the program.
The INDEX Institute focuses on cutting-edge research in the field of nanotechnology, specifically targeting the development of the next-generation logic switch that will replace today’s chip architecture. This effort includes innovations in nanomaterials, fabrication technologies, nanochip designs, and system schemes for realizing the non-conventional, low-energy computer chip designs for the time frame of 2020 and beyond.
NRI 2.0 is the successor to an earlier multi-year collaboration between NRI and NIST that focused on basic physical principles for the next logic switch that serve as the building blocks of electronic devices. The NRI and the collaboration with NIST are managed by the Nanoelectronics Research Corporation (NERC), a special purpose subsidiary of SRC that is a leading university-industry research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies.
