Transcript of the Governors remarks at the ribbon cutting:

Governor Cuomo: We are very excited to be here. I feel that in many ways this fair is going to be the best fair weve ever had. There are a lot of new advancements and a lot of new sights to see, so I am excited to be here. I brought two of my daughters along with me, Cara and Michaela, who are going to be the judges for me, because theyve been here for many, many years. Lets give a big round of applause to the Department of Agriculture and all of the people who worked so hard to put this together. Theyve really done a great job. Now lets cut the ribbon, and lets enjoy the fair!

In addition to being one of the largest State Fairs in the United States, the Great New York State Fair is also the oldest in the nation. The first fair took place in Syracuse in 1841, and began being held there permanently in 1890.

This years event includes a variety of attractions and programs that are part of the Taste NY initiative, which is designed to raise the profile of local agricultural vendors and small businesses from across the state. These include a tent for tasting and purchasing a variety of New York State brands, a tasting trivia trail, wine and cheese seminars, and the Taste NY Wine, Beer & Spirits Village at the Colonnades.

Earlier this week, Governor Cuomo announced that Amtrak will continue its tradition of providing train service to the Fair, with five trains dropping passengers off daily for the 12 days of the fair. The Fair runs from Thursday, August 21 to Monday, September 1.
