Governor Cuomo Directs State Department of Health to Deploy Staff to St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse

WYSIWYG

“On Friday, the State Department of Health performed preliminary testing for the presence of Legionella bacteria at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. The hospital’s 11 cooling towers have all tested negative, but preliminary tests indicate the presence of Legionella bacteria in part of the building’s water system. The samples which have preliminarily tested positive are now undergoing culture testing to definitively determine if there is live Legionella bacteria in the system that is capable of causing disease.

“At Governor Cuomo’s direction, the State Department of Health – which has extensive expertise in the management of Legionella – has deployed staff to the hospital to provide consultation to the facility and to perform further testing. The State Office of Emergency Management is working closely with Onondaga County to ensure patients and staff at the hospital have adequate bottled water for drinking. The water in the hospital's systems can still be safely used for hand washing, bed bathing, and cleaning. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as test results and more information become available.”
