Statement from Governor Kathy Hochul on Call with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra Regarding Biden Administration Plan to Welcome up to 100,000 Refugees Fleeing Putin’s Horrifying War

“This morning, I spoke with Secretary Becerra to reiterate New York State’s willingness and readiness to assist individuals fleeing the egregious violence that has embroiled Ukraine and the region. As the proud home to the largest Ukrainian community in the United States, we are grateful to President Biden for his continued leadership in this moment of global crisis and applaud his Administration's commitment to welcome those fleeing Vladimir Putin's horrifying war.

“Our state has a long and storied history as a safe haven for populations displaced by conflict, including the people of Ukraine, thousands of whom have settled in our state over decades. Just like the Statue of Liberty stands in our harbor to welcome those in need, New Yorkers are prepared to assist in any manner possible to help ease Ukrainian refugees’ suffering and ensure a smooth transition into our communities.”
