"The 9/11 attacks happened almost 18 years ago, but to the brave men and women who risked their lives and ran toward the disaster, the tragedy lives with them daily. So many of these heroes are still grappling with severe health effects sustained during their rescue missions, and it is our responsibility as a nation to hear their stories and ensure they have the funding and care they need and deserve.

"We have been calling on Washington to work with the New York State delegation to do this for years. It shouldn't even be a topic of debate, and it shouldn't get locked up as part of the usual political gamesmanship in Washington - they need to replenish the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

"The fund is rapidly diminishing, leaving so many firefighters and other first responders without adequate medical coverage to treat their illnesses.

"I applaud the members of the FDNY who traveled to Albany today to speak up about this critical issue and am grateful for their advocacy. Now it's time for Washington to act."
