Initial Data Shows New Bridge Has Led to Traffic Speeds 45-84 Percent Faster - An Average of 65% Faster Overall
"This week we celebrated the opening of the new Kosciuszko Bridge, a historic moment for New York City and our entire state. The project is the latest example of the Empire State leading the nation in rebuilding infrastructure, and the two new spans of the bridge will ease travel, enhance safety and reduce traffic delays by 65 percent on a crossing that for generations was a notorious bottleneck.
"The bridge's nine lanes were opened to traffic early Thursday morning, and after only 24 hours we are already seeing real progress towards significantly easing congestion. New York State Department of Transportation data shows that between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM on Thursday, average speeds were between 45 to 84 percent faster than the typical speeds in August -- or 65 percent faster overall. We are continuing to monitor the bridge traffic in real time to ensure the new, improved traffic patterns are having the maximum impact for drivers, however these results are extremely encouraging and demonstrate what New York can do when we think big and build for the future."
