“Governor Cuomo applauds the Mayor’s emphasis on expanding access to affordable housing. This has been a critically important issue for working and middle class families and a priority of the Governor’s since his days with the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Governor believes Mayor de Blasio is absolutely right to continue his focus on ensuring that all New Yorkers have a safe and affordable place to call home. Similarly, the Mayor’s focus on protecting current tenants, like the State has done with the successful Tenant Protection Unit, is another important step and the State looks forward to partnering with the City on this matter. Rent regulations are an important piece of this equation, and we will review the Mayor’s proposal outlined today.

“The Governor agrees with Mayor de Blasio that we must raise the minimum wage in New York. While we believe the State Legislature will view an increase to more than $13 as a non-starter, we will continue to push for the aggressive proposal the Governor outlined last month that also accounts for the higher cost of living that workers experience in New York City.

“The MTA uses Sunnyside Yards as an important facility for our transportation system, and it is not available for any other use in the near term. The State and the MTA are studying several potential future uses of the site from a long term planning perspective.”
