Governor Kathy Hochul today updated New Yorkers on Long Island Rail Road service following this morning’s train derailment east of Jamaica Station. Crews responded to the scene immediately following the incident and no life-threatening injuries were reported.
“Following this morning’s derailment, I directed the MTA and other State personnel to do whatever possible to support impacted passengers and quickly return to full service,” Governor Hochul said. “I’m grateful to the MTA crew workers and first responders who quickly sprung into action following this incident.”
Customers should expect track changes at Jamaica and possible delays through midday tomorrow. Eastbound Hempstead Branch trains are bypassing Hollis and Queens Village. New York City Transit is cross-honoring on the Q2, Q3, Q8 and Q110 buses for service between Jamaica and Queens Village. Train 722 departing Grand Central, headed to Hempstead, was involved in an eight-car derailment at approximately 11:12 a.m. There were approximately 100 passengers onboard who were quickly assisted by Long Island Rail Road personnel, coming from both Hillside Maintenance Facility and Jamaica, as well as the train crew. Less than two hours later, FDNY and LIRR brought a rescue train to the site of the incident to pick up passengers and bring them to the next station. There were 13 confirmed injuries, none of which were life-threatening.
Crews and equipment are currently onsite, working to restore full service. This process includes re-railing, repairing damage to the railroad ties and fixing other infrastructure.
