Governor Hochul Celebrates SUNY Schools’ Recognition in the Us News & World Reports College Rankings

University at Albany, Binghamton University, University at Buffalo, and Stony Brook University All Jumped Up in Rankings, with Stony Brook University Leading the Pack Moving from #77 to #58

Governor Hochul Has Prioritized Transforming SUNY by Making Critical Investments to Attract Students & Faculty

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced top rankings for SUNY campuses in the U.S. News & World Report 2024 College Rankings. All four university centers at Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, and Stony Brook jumped up dramatically, with Stony Brook University leading the pack for Best University Rankings from #77 to #58.

“Quality and affordable higher education can transform lives, and this milestone shows our incredible progress in building the best public education institution in the country,” Governor Hochul said. “SUNY not only offers an accessible education, but one that exceeds standards in an environment where students can pursue and balance other interests. Whether they’re athletes, actors, musicians or artists, there’s a place for everyone. New Yorkers and visiting students, alike, can build bright futures for themselves at our SUNY schools.”

This U.S. News & World Report placed a greater emphasis this year on social mobility and outcomes for graduating college students. U.S. News evaluated nearly 1,500 U.S. four-year bachelor’s degree-granting institutions on as many as 19 measures.

In the FY 2024 state budget, Governor Hochul announced unprecedented support for education in New York State. The budget invests $1.3 billion in new funding for SUNY State-operated campus capital projects and $106 million for SUNY community colleges; $163 million in new, recurring general operating aid for SUNY State-operated campuses, and another $75 million for one-time investments in transformational initiatives at campuses that support innovation, help meet the workforce needs of the future, and provide needed support to students.

The Enacted Budget creates the first-ever New York State matching fund for contributions made to the endowments of SUNY's four university centers: Buffalo, Stony Brook, Albany, and Binghamton. The fund will provide $1 in State funds for every $2 contributed to university endowments, up to $500 million. The budget also includes a $138 million funding floor to maintain current community college funding levels. 53 percent of full-time in-state students attend SUNY tuition free because of ongoing support from Governor Hochul and state legislators.

SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. said, “While any system of rankings doesn't convey everything that is important to know, we are proud to see our SUNY campuses receive recognition for what they do for our students every day—provide an excellent education at a great value and serve as engines of social mobility. Our campuses are constantly evolving their programs to meet the needs of current and future students, so students graduate with an excellent education and prepared to succeed in their careers. Congratulations to each and every SUNY college and university recognized in this ranking and other best college listings this year.”

About The State University of New York

The State University of New York, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, and more than 95 percent of all New Yorkers live within 30 miles of any one of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities. Across the system, SUNY has four academic health centers, five hospitals, four medical schools, two dental schools, a law school, the country’s oldest school of maritime, the state’s only college of optometry, and manages one US Department of Energy National Laboratory. In total, SUNY serves about 1.4 million students amongst its entire portfolio of credit- and non-credit-bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. SUNY oversees nearly a quarter of academic research in New York. Research expenditures system-wide are nearly $1.1 billion in fiscal year 2022, including significant contributions from students and faculty. There are more than three million SUNY alumni worldwide, and one in three New Yorkers with a college degree is a SUNY alum. To learn more about how SUNY creates opportunities, visit www.suny.edu.
