Governor Kathy Hochul today announced over $46 million in grant awards through the New York State Council on the Arts. Supporting over 1,000 nonprofit organizations and 500 individual artists, these grants support New York’s vibrant creative economy by building community, boosting tourism and local economies, and strengthening personal and collective health. With more than $34 million already awarded as multi-year grants to 729 organizations, this funding round brings this fiscal year’s totals to $80 million in grants for New York State arts and culture.

“Research confirms what we’ve always known here in New York: arts and culture are a powerhouse, with a staggering return on investment for our economy and our communities,” Governor Hochul said. “Nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences generated $151.7 billion in economic activity nationwide in 2022 and New York’s unparalleled arts and culture sector is leading the way to benefit our residents, our students and our visitors every day. I commend these grantees on their achievements and look forward to their contributions in the coming year.”

In this funding cycle, four different awards categories were announced:

  • Support for Organizations grants will provide $31,887,411 to 1,021 arts groups including museums, visual arts programs, arts education organizations, and music, dance, and theater companies.
  • Support for Artists grants will provide $5,040,000 to 504 artists of all disciplines.
  • Targeted Opportunities grants will provide $ $2,997,034 to support folk art apprentices for individual artists, rehearsal and studio spaces for the performing arts and performing arts residencies.
  • Regrants and Services grants will provide $6,619,516 to 25 regional arts and culture organizations across the state to extend the impact of NYSCA’s grantmaking.

Additional FY2024 funding will be provided to 729 multi-year grantee organizations, across all disciplines, for a total of $34,445,805.

In 2021, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) overhauled its funding strategies to allow greater access to art funding across the state and recommitted its support to artists. As a result, NYSCA awarded grants to 84 percent of first-time applicants and more individual artists than ever before. In this round, 70% of funding went to organizations with budgets under $1 million; and 53% of funding went to organizations with budgets under $500,000.

A full list of the artists and organizations who have been awarded grants is here.

NYSCA is still accepting applications for $37 Million in grants for the Capital Projects Fund through Jan. 11, 2024. NYSCA's Capital Projects Fund supports arts and cultural nonprofits seeking State funding for investments in capital improvements to allow organizations to sustain and expand cultural programming for diverse audiences, promote accessibility and environmental sustainability, preserve and create jobs, and ultimately contribute to the growth of New York's dynamic arts and tourism sectors. New York State Council on the Arts Chair Katherine Nicholls said, “Thanks to the unwavering support of Governor Hochul and our Legislature, NYSCA is so proud to support the work of these organizations and artists from all across New York. Spanning the entire breath of the arts and culture sector – from world-renowned performers to after-school programs, from long established museums to community arts collectives – these organizations and artists together are a powerful driver of health, tourism, economy and education for our residents and visitors. On behalf of Council and staff, congratulations to all our NYSCA grantees and thank you for your perseverance, your creativity and your tireless service to New York State.”

State Senator Jose Serrano said, "We as New Yorkers enjoy access to the most innovative, community-focused and creative artists and organizations in the nation. This crucial investment will support over one thousand organizations as well as hundreds of individual artists, expanding the tremendous benefits of the arts and culture in all corners of the State. I congratulate the grantees on this tremendous achievement and look forward to all they will accomplish for New York."

Assemblymember Daniel O'Donnell said, "The influence of the arts is deeply woven into the fabric of New York State, and this essential funding will not only strengthen and enrich our communities but also elevate our tourism, boost our health, and stimulate our economy. As Chair of the Committee on Tourism, Parks, Arts, and Sports Development, I deeply appreciate my colleagues' commitment to enhancing New York's renowned arts and culture sector, and I look forward to the positive impact it will have on our state. Congratulations to all grantees."
