Governor Hochul Announces New York State Landmarks to Be Lit Green in Honor of Arthritis Awareness Month

13 State Landmarks to be Illuminated in Green on May 6

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced that State landmarks and bridges across New York will be illuminated in green on May 6 in recognition of Arthritis Awareness Month.

"Millions of New Yorkers suffer from arthritis every day, and conquering arthritis starts with understanding the symptoms and knowing what help is available," Governor Hochul said. "As we illuminate our State landmarks tonight in honor of Arthritis Awareness Month, it's important to stay educated on the treatment options available to all those suffering from this debilitating disease. I urge all New Yorkers - regardless of age - to learn about the symptoms of arthritis and find access to care as needed."

These 13 landmarks and bridges will be illuminated in green:

  • One World Trade Center
  • Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
  • Kosciuszko Bridge
  • The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
  • State Education Building
  • Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
  • Empire State Plaza
  • State Fairgrounds - Main Gate & Expo Center
  • Niagara Falls
  • Albany International Airport Gateway
  • MTA LIRR - East End Gateway at Penn Station
  • Fairport Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal
  • Moynihan Train Hall

Acting New York State Department of Health Acting Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, "Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the nation, costing tens of billions of dollars in direct medical costs and causing crippling pain for those living with the disease. Studies show that social, economic, and environmental inequities can lead to adverse arthritis health outcomes, which is why I am grateful for Governor Hochul's continuing leadership in ensuring access to effective, equitable and inclusive disease management strategies for all New Yorkers."
