Thirteen Landmarks to be Lit Teal
Governor Kathy Hochul tonight announced that New York State landmarks will be lit teal today, November 4, 2021, to mark Alzheimer's Awareness Month.
"Like many, Alzheimer's is deeply personal for me," Governor Hochul said. "My grandfather - an Irish immigrant who worked at Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo - struggled with the disease later in life. Alzheimer's Awareness Month is a time for us to reflect on all those suffering from this debilitating disease, as well as their families who share so much of the burden. This month is also a time for us to show our appreciation for and help in any way we can those unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to caring for those in need."
The landmarks to be lit in recognition of Alzheimer's Awareness Month include:
- One World Trade Center
- Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
- Kosciuszko Bridge
- The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
- State Education Building
- Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
- State Fairgrounds - Main Gate & Expo Center
- Niagara Falls
- The "Franklin D. Roosevelt" Mid-Hudson Bridge
- Grand Central Terminal - Pershing Square Viaduct
- Albany International Airport Gateway
- The Lake Placid Olympic Jumping Complex
- MTA LIRR - East End Gateway at Penn Station
Currently there are over 400,000 New Yorkers ages 65 or over who are living with Alzheimer's disease. By 2025 this number is expected to increase over twelve percent, meaning a projected 460,000 will need some type of care or assistance. New York is proud to offer a statewide program providing a comprehensive array of community-based services for individuals with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. The Alzheimer's Association, New York State Coalition coordinates the Alzheimer's Disease Community Assistance Program in every region of the state. These services strive to postpone or prevent nursing home placement and support individuals with Alzheimer's, caregivers, and professionals.
