Diverse Group of 227 from Across New York Will Join the Ranks of 4,500 Veteran Troopers
Governor Kathy Hochul today congratulated 227 new State Troopers as they graduated from the 210th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy during a ceremony at the Empire Plaza Convention Center in Albany.
"These men and women we welcome into the New York State Police today have worked and trained extremely hard for six months and have dedicated themselves to protecting the people of New York State," Governor Hochul said. "I commend these new Troopers for their commitment to public service and making our state a safer place for those who live, work and travel through New York. I wish them luck as they start their careers and continue the 105-year-long tradition of the New York State Police."
The National Anthem was performed by Trooper Rhania Traore and the ceremony included a video presentation of the expansive training conducted by the members of the 210th Basic School Session. The graduates, who were selected from a list of more than 1,700 candidates, will report for field duty on March 31. For the following 10 weeks, the new troopers will be evaluated under a field-training program supervised by senior Field Training Officers.
New York State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen said, "To our graduates, today is a recognition of the hard work and perseverance you have shown during your 26 weeks of difficult training. It is also a testament to your continued dedication, as you waited years before your name was called to join the long gray line. I congratulate and welcome all of our new Troopers to one of the most prestigious and well-respected law enforcement agencies in the nation."
In addition to honoring all graduates from the 210th Session of Basic School, Superintendent Bruen presented the following awards:
Academic Achievement Award
As a special incentive for all students attending the State Police Academy Basic School, the Superintendent sponsors the awarding of a firearm for the attainment of the highest level of academic performance during Academy training.
The winner of the Academic Performance Award is Trooper Dominic M. Cianfrini, a 30-year-old resident of Cheektowaga, New York. He is a graduate of Daemen College with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Prior to joining the New York State Police as a Trooper, he worked as a physician assistant at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Buffalo specializing in emergency medicine for seven years. Throughout the Academy training program, he achieved an outstanding overall academic average of 96.35%. He will be assigned to Troop E.
Firearms Proficiency Award
The New York State Trooper Foundation has sponsored the awarding of a firearm for the attainment of the highest level of performance in all phases of firearms training.
The winner of the Superintendent's Firearms Proficiency Award is Trooper James K. Davidson age 33, of Baldswinsville, New York. He is a graduate of Liberty University and Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a master's degree in criminal justice. Prior to joining the New York State Police, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms for six years followed by three years with the U.S. Capitol Police. He still currently serves in the U.S. Navy Reserves. During firearms training, he fired an average score of 250 out of a possible 250. He will be assigned to Troop D.

Investigator Joseph T. Aversa Physical Fitness Award
The New York State Police Investigators Association has sponsored the awarding of a firearm for the attainment of the highest degree of physical fitness during the physical training program at the Academy. This award will be presented in memory of deceased Investigator Joseph Aversa. Investigator Aversa made the ultimate sacrifice in New York City on March 5, 1990, during a narcotics investigation while serving as a member of the Joint Drug Enforcement Task Force. Investigator Aversa was a six-year State Police veteran who believed that physical conditioning was an integral part of being a Trooper.
The recipient of this Award Is Trooper Vincent F. Tripi, age 24, of Colden, New York. Trooper Tripi is a graduate of SUNY Buffalo State College with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Prior to joining the State Police, he was a custodian and worked as a pizza delivery driver. During the physical agility testing, he achieved the highest score of all 227 Members of the 210th Session, a tribute to his superb physical conditioning. He will be assigned to Troop E.
Student Representative
The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association has sponsored the awarding of a firearm to the member of the class who is selected by his or her peers to represent them during these exercises. The PBA presents the award in memory of Trooper John J. McKenna IV, who was killed in action in 2006, while serving his country as a Marine in Iraq.
Trooper James K. Davidson has been chosen as the class representative. Also the award winner of the Firearms Proficiency Award, Trooper Davidson is a graduate of Liberty University and Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a master's in criminal justice. Prior to joining the New York State Police, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Master at Arms for 6 years followed by 3 years with the U.S. Capitol Police. He still currently serves in the U.S. Navy Reserves. He will be assigned to Troop D.
