Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed legislation (S.7923/A.10125) designating a portion of the State highway system in DutchessCounty as the "Wappinger Veterans Memorial Highway." The legislation, requested by the Town of Wappinger, will rename a portion of Route 9 in the town to honor the sacrifices made by veterans.

"Veterans Day gives us time every year to honor those who have dedicated their lives to protect our nation, as well as reflect on the meaning of a life in service," Governor Cuomo said. "By renaming the portion of the State highway system in Dutchess County, we are showing our appreciation for the sacrifice these brave service members and their families have made, as well as honoring the enduring legacy of their heroism."

Governor Cuomo also signed three other bills today, on Veterans Day, in recognition of the sacrifices made by New Yorkers in every region of the state.

Senator Sue Serino said, "Veterans Day is a day for us all to pause and come together to honor the tremendous sacrifices our vets—and their families—have made for each and every one of us. I thank the Governor for helping our community honor local veterans by signing this bill into law today. Thousands of residents and visitors alike travel this stretch of road regularly, and naming it in honor of our veterans is one of the many ways our community is working to continually honor their service and dedication. The Wappinger Veterans Memorial Highway will help send an important message to our vets that they will forever have a grateful community behind them. I thank our servicemen and women and all of those who played a role in this important initiative."

Assembly Member Kieran Michael Lalor said, "Wappinger is fortunate enough to be home to heroes with names that grace our local parks like Major Joseph McDonald, Sergeant Mark Palmateer and Major Daniel Martz. Wappinger is also a place where many humble veterans reside, work and contribute to our community in innumerable ways.  Along with Senator Sue Serino and the Town of Wappinger, I am very pleased that Route 9 in Wappinger is now known as Wappinger Veterans Memorial Highway in honor of these brave men and women who have served our nation and preserved our way of life."
