Governor Cuomo Highlights Taste NY Participation This Year

Events doubled from 2013-2014, opening new opportunities for New York agricultural producers

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today highlighted Taste NY's participation in 58 high-profile events in 2014, up from 28 events during 2013. At the State’s second Wine, Beer, Spirits and Cider Summit, the Governor outlined an ambitious goal of doubling the number of Taste NY events from 2013 to 2014, which the program succeeded in doing. Taste NY events promote New York’s topnotch agricultural products—including produce, cheese, yogurt, maple products, and beer, wine, cider and spirits through tastings at tourist attractions throughout the year.

“The Empire State has some of the best agricultural products in the nation, and by doubling the number of Taste NY events over the last year we’ve significantly raised the profile of our vendors and small businesses,” Governor Cuomo said. “Highlighting our world-class producers means growing the market for their products and helping them succeed. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish together so far, and I look forward to seeing this industry continue to thrive in the years ahead.”

This announcement comes on the heels of Governor Cuomo’s announcement in October of a major expansion to the already vigorous Taste NY program, which proposed to triple the gross sales of participating vendors by the end of 2015 through a multi-pronged approach. These strategies include new options for online purchasing, new Taste NY retail outlets and vending machines, a mobile application to help tourists locate Taste NY attractions, and a new Taste NY office in Brooklyn to help strengthen ties between upstate producers and downstate consumers.

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “Governor Cuomo’s Taste NY program does a great job in publicizing what many New Yorkers already know: some of the best foods and beverages in the world are located right here in New York State. By more than doubling our events in just one year, we are opening up new markets for farmers and agricultural producers while helping consumers enjoy more New York State products.”

Brian Facquet, Distiller and Founder of Prohibition Distillery in Roscoe, said, “We’ve been a huge fan of and active participants in Taste NY events since the beginning. The program has given us opportunities to showcase our products in places where we could have never imagined such as the Super Bowl, the PGA Championship and the Manhattan Cocktail Classic. Any opportunity to get in front of people is an opportunity to increase sales. We truly appreciate what the state is doing for craft distilleries and look forward to participating in Taste NY events in the coming years.”

Adam Kobren, President of bobbysue’s nuts! in Chappaqua, said, “Our overall experience with Taste NY began with last summer’s Fancy Food Show in New York City, and so far the experience has been great. We’ve participated in at least eight events since then, and the total support we’ve gotten from state government has been awesome. We now sell our products at the Taste NY stores at JFK airport, MacArthur Airport and Grand Central Terminal. Taste NY has helped us not only expand within our own backyard, but also beyond it.”

Paul Leone, Executive Director of the New York State Brewers Association said, “Taste NY is a great way for New York State Breweries to get exposure through a wide range of trade shows and festivals. Many New York State Breweries don’t have an opportunity to attend events like those that Taste NY sponsors, so having them include us is a huge marketing opportunity for our members to get their names out around the state, and the fact they added even more events in 2014 has certainly had an impact on the growing craft beer scene happening throughout the entire state.”
