TOP Governor Cuomo Delivers Remarks Before Marching...

Governor Receives “Lunar New Year Man of the Year Award”

WYSIWYG

Earlier today, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo marched in the Flushing Lunar New Year Parade in Queens. Prior to the parade, the Governor delivered remarks and was presented with the Lunar New Year Man of the Year Award from the Flushing Chinese Business Association.

VIDEO of the Governor delivering remarks is available on YouTube here and in TV-quality format (h264, mp4) here.

PHOTOS from the event will be available on the Governor’s Flickr page shortly.

A rush transcript of the Governor’s remarks before the parade is available below:

Thank you very much! First, to Peter Tu, let’s give him a big round of applause for his leadership and everything he’s done. And to Paul Yoo, let’s give him a big round of applause – it’ll also help us keep warm. And to Liu Tee Shu, thank you, thank you for what you’ve done. The Korean American Association of Queens, the Flushing Chamber, Chinese Business Association, we thank them all very much for all their good work. Today, we say “An-nyeong-ha-sae-yo,” hello to all. And we are very pleased to be here to celebrate the Lunar New Year. And we say “ho-nyen-gee-shee’ang,” good luck for this Monkey Year.

This is a special Lunar New Year celebration because this is no longer just a Queens celebration, no longer just an Asian celebration. I was honored to sign into law a law that said this is now an official holiday of the state of New York. The Lunar New Year is now an official holiday and public schools will be closed in honor of the Lunar New Year and in honor of the Asian American community and what they mean to this great state.

This parade also shows that a dragon is not afraid of a little cold, and people have turned out in force, and we’re going to have a fun parade. And I am a boy from Queens, as you heard from Peter. I was born in Queens – Hollis, Queens, just down from Union Turnpike. I went to Archbishop Molloy up on Main Street.

And it is such a pleasure to see what the Asian American community has done for Queens. The energy they brought, the economy they brought, the culture that they have brought – and Queens is stronger than ever. It is literally an international tourism site, with so many visitors coming to Queens.

And it’s such a joy to see the Asian American community flourishing here in Queens, making New York a better state. Because that is the New York story. People come from all over for a chance at opportunity and education to be part of this city and state and they make this city and state stronger. And the Asian American community is a beautiful example of that.

So happy new year to all. Thank you Peter for this great award. It’s my pleasure to lead this parade this year. Let’s march! Thank you.
