Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that flags on state government buildings will be flown at half-staff starting on Sunday, October 7 through Wednesday, October 10 to honor the brave men and women across the country who have lost their lives while fighting fires.

"Firefighters risk their lives each and every day, running toward danger instead of away from it, in order to ensure we are kept out of harm's way," Governor Cuomo said. "By lowering flags to half-staff, we honor those who have lost their lives while saving others, and remember their selflessness in another's greatest time of need."

On Tuesday, October 9, New York's fallen heroes will be honored at the 21st Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Ceremony in Albany by adding the names of 28 firefighters who lost their lives to the Fallen Firefighters Memorial. The Fallen Firefighters Memorial, dedicated in 1998, honors the memory and valor of New York's fallen firefighters at the memorial during Fire Prevention Week each year. With the addition of these heroes, the Fallen Firefighters Memorial now honors 2,552 individuals.
