Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that a section of roadway of Route 9 will be designated as the "Detective John M. Falcone Memorial Highway". The portion of the highway in Dutchess County will be named after Falcone, an 18-year veteran of the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department who was lost his life on duty while protecting a three-year-old girl in 2011.
"Detective Falcone served his community bravely, and he paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to keep innocent New Yorkers safe," Governor Cuomo said. "His actions are a reminder of the selflessness that characterizes our state's law enforcement community, and I am proud to sign this bill in his memory."
Detective Falcone served with distinction as he devoted nearly half his life to protecting the people of the City of Poughkeepsie. On Friday, February 18, 2011, Detective Falcone, sacrificed his life while protecting the people of the City of Poughkeepsie from an armed man. During the incident, Detective Falcone heroically saved the life of a three-year-old girl by wresting her from the gun wielding assailant. During the struggle, Detective Falcone was fatally shot before the assailant took his own life.
Detective Falcones leadership and devotion to the police force was recognized by his posthumous promotion to Detective by the Poughkeepsie City Chief of Police.
The newly-designated roadway on Route 9 covers the southern boundary of the City of Poughkeepsie to the northern boundary of the City of Poughkeepsie. This law passed both houses of the legislature as S6422 and A9222, respectively.?
Senator Terry Gipson, sponsor of the bill, said, "This memorial highway should serve as a constant reminder of Detective Falcone's legacy of heroic service, inspiring courage, and commitment to justice in the City of Poughkeepsie. We must also be reminded of the mother, Jessica, who lost her life during this tragic incident, and those who continue to fall victim to the vicious cycle of domestic violence. Thanks to Governor Cuomo's announcement today, these important reminders will remain memorialized in our community."

Having met Detective Falcone, I can personally attest to his commitment and dedication to serving, protecting and sacrificing his life for the people of the City of Poughkeepsie as a last measure of devotion. Designating a portion of Route 9 as the "Detective John M. Falcone Memorial Highway" will show our gratitude and keep his memory and spirit alive. While we honor Detective Falcone today, his memory and bravery will never be forgotten.
