Southbound Bridge Open to Traffic Thursday – Four Months Ahead of Schedule

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of the reconstructed southbound Hylan Boulevard Bridge over the Staten Island Expressway between eastbound Narrows Road South and westbound Narrows Road North. The southbound bridge, part of a $10 million project to reconstruct both the southbound and northbound bridges, will be fully open to traffic beginning Thursday, September 1 – four months ahead of schedule.

"Investing in our transportation network is essential to building a strong economy and ensuring safe and reliable travel for New Yorkers," Governor Cuomo said. "Millions of commuters and residents use and depend on this bridge, and these improvements will improve the flow of traffic and help ensure it remains dependable for years to come."
The project began in January 2015, and involved replacing the bridge decks, repaving the bridge and approaches, and installing new lightings, barriers, fencing, sidewalks and pavement markings. As part of a host of improvements, electrical conduits were installed under both bridges and a new traffic signal was also installed at Narrows Road South at the entrance of the eastbound Staten Island Expressway. The northbound bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of fall 2016.

Senator Diane Savino said, "There are few things this borough needs more than improved infrastructure. I am thrilled that the Governor and his administration saw this project through, ahead of schedule, for a borough that already has some of the longest commutes in the nation."

Senator Andrew Lanza said,"It is great to see the southbound bridge be completed ahead of schedule. This infrastructure improvement by Governor Cuomo and the NYS DOT both modernizes and makes for safe and convenient passage for the many who travel it."

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, "The Hylan Boulevard Bridges project is another example of how the New York State Department of Transportation is improving Staten Island’s transportation infrastructure to meet current and future needs. Delivering the project ahead of schedule ensures that motorists will be driving on a brand new roadway surface not only before the harsh winter weather sets in, but before the busy Labor Day travel weekend."
