Northbound Bridge Opens to Traffic Ahead of Schedule
Major Component of $10 Million Bridge Reconstruction
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of the reconstructed northbound Hylan Boulevard Bridge over the Staten Island Expressway between eastbound Narrows Road South and westbound Narrows Road North. The northbound bridge, part of a $10 million project to reconstruct both northbound and southbound bridges, will open to traffic one month ahead of schedule.
"This construction, completed ahead of schedule, will help ensure the bridge remains viable and reliable for the Staten Island motorists who depend on it for years to come," Governor Cuomo said. "Our major investments in vital infrastructure upgrades on Staten Island and beyond help to reduce congestion, increase resiliency, make travel safer, and support economic growth."
The project began in January 2015 and included replacing the bridge decks and repaving the bridges and approaches. Work also included installing new lighting, barriers, sidewalks, under deck conduits, wiring, and communication cables.
New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, "This project is another example of how Governor Cuomo is transforming our transportation infrastructure statewide. The Department has reconstructed two aging bridges to provide reliable, safe structures that will serve Staten Islanders long into the future."
The southbound bridge was also completed ahead of schedule in August 2016. A new traffic signal, which will be fully operational in early 2017, is being installed at Narrows Road South at the entrance of the eastbound Staten Island Expressway.
Remaining work on the project includes replacing bearings on both bridges and installing fencing, guiderail and pavement markings. The overall project is expected to be completed in 2017.
Senator Diane Savino said, "I am pleased to see the ahead of schedule completion of the Northbound Hylan Blvd Bridge. Staten Island commuters face some of the longest travel times in the country, and the necessary work done a testament to the Governor's commitment to Staten Island's infrastructure."
Senator Andrew Lanza said, "This latest improvement to our transportation infrastructure was sorely needed and will go far in reducing congestion and improving travel conditions for Staten Island residents. I thank Governor Cuomo for yet another investment in Staten Island’s roads and bridges which will improve the quality of life for both local residents and visitors."
Staten Island Borough President James Oddo said, "I love hearing the term ‘finished ahead of schedule’ referring to government infrastructure projects. This project was difficult for some Staten Islanders commuters because it has caused disruptions, but it was a necessary one to improve our infrastructure and make it safer. We are happy to see it begin to wrap up. Thank you to Governor Cuomo and Commissioner Driscoll for delivering once again.”
