On-Time and On-Budget Project Includes Safety Improvements and Roadway Upgrades to I-90 in Both Directions Between Exits 26 and 27

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the $7.2 million project to rehabilitate the New York State Thruway (I-90) in Schenectady and Montgomery Counties between exits 26 and 27 has been completed on time and on budget. The project replaced 17.4 miles of asphalt and included several safety upgrades and roadway improvements for the nearly 30,000 motorists who use this corridor daily to travel throughout the Mohawk Valley.

"This section of the Thruway is a vital link between the Mohawk Valley and Capital Region and its continued viability is critically important to the economies of both regions, as well as their residents," Governor Cuomo said. "These improvements, which were completed on time and on budget, will help ensure this roadway remains safe, reliable and resilient for years to come."

The rehabilitation project began in July 2016 and involved safety and maintenance upgrades such as tree removal to reduce the fallen rock fall zone and the installation of a new rock containment fence along the roadway. Additionally, the project's asphalt replacement and debris clearing activities were important steps in improving the roadway's drainage.

New York State Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Finch said, "Smart investment in our infrastructure keeps our roadway safe and reliable for motorists – which are always our top priorities. With thousands of drivers using this stretch of the Thruway every day, preserving this corridor is not only critical for daily commuters, but for all of New York State’s tourists visiting the region."

The project was completed in accordance with the requirements of Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First Initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists and ensures that disruptions are kept at a minimum for drivers at highway and bridge projects across the state.

Senator George Amedore said, "Investing in and maintaining our infrastructure is important to the safety and well-being of every New Yorker. These recent upgrades and enhancements will improve travel conditions and create a safer, more reliable driving experience for everyone who utilizes the Thruway."

Assemblymember Angelo Santabarbara, "As a Civil Engineer now serving in our State Assembly, I know that smart investments like this to improve infrastructure, roads and bridges with 21st century engineering and technology will ensure the future success of our upstate region. With the significant investments we have seen in projects that are transforming our area of Upstate New York into a regional destination, our upstate communities must be as accessible as possible and ensure easier and safer travel for local residents, workers, students attending our community colleges and visitors from across the state coming to take part in all we have to offer."
