Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that Novelis, a leading aluminum production and recycling company, has completed a $200 million expansion to its existing facility in Oswego. The 180,000 square-foot expansion enabled Novelis to hire over 100 additional full time employees in New York and increase its aluminum production in the region by five times its existing automotive capacity in North America.

This $200 million expansion project by Novelis provides vital economic development for Central New York creating more than 100 permanent jobs and bringing significant private investment to the community, Governor Cuomo said. Novelis commitment to the region is further evidence that Upstate New York is open for business, and I look forward to the companys continued presence in Oswego.

Novelis President and Chief Executive Officer Phil Martens said, This automotive expansion in North America is an important piece of our global strategy in a market that is experiencing explosive growth. We are aggressively increasing our capacity to produce automotive sheet worldwide and we are well-positioned to extend our leadership in this strategic market segment.

This expansion to the 1.4 million square foot facility allows for the installation of two new high performance aluminum finishing lines for automotive applications. As a result of the expansion, which began in 2011, Novelis has added over 100 new full-time positions for a total of more than 850 Novelis employees at the Oswego plant. The expansion project included a $5 million grant from Empire State Development.

Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams said, "As a company with clients and opportunities across the nation and around the globe, Novelis recognizes that it makes smart business sense to invest in the Empire State. Their expansion has already created more than 100 new jobs in Oswego, with many more to come and today's announcement is great news for the future of Central New York's economy. I congratulate Novelis on their significant expansion and look forward to their continued growth."

Novelis is the leading producer of rolled aluminum and the largest recycler of aluminum in the world with 25 plants in nine countries. The Oswego facility serves as the companys largest, wholly-owned fabrication facility in North America, producing over a billion pounds of high-quality aluminum sheet each year.
