Four Major Bridges Replaced to Strengthen Critical Infrastructure
Complements State’s Record $21.1 Billion Investment in Roads and Bridges
Minimal Disruption to Motorists in Accordance with Governor’s Drivers First Initiative
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the completion of a $14.2 million bridge replacement project in Erie County. The project replaced four Interstate 290 bridges over Delaware Avenue (State Route 384) and Military Road (State Route 265) in the town of Tonawanda and directly complements the state’s record $21.1 billion investment in roads and bridges, primarily in Upstate New York. The bridges will open tomorrow morning.
"The resiliency and safety of our bridges and roadways are essential to supporting economic growth, and these projects will help aid in the continued resurgence of Western New York," Governor Cuomo said. "These projects are one more step toward a stronger and more prosperous New York for all."
The project included replacement of four bridges; two structures in each the eastbound and westbound directions carrying Interstate 290 over Delaware Avenue and Military Road. Work also included the reconstruction of a portion of Interstate 290 between the CSX Railroad and Military Road.
New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, "The Governor’s continued commitment to improving our roads and bridges will have lasting effects for decades to come. The four new bridges on Interstate 290 will improve the safety and mobility on this important economic and commuter corridor."
The replacement of the eastbound bridges over Delaware Avenue and Military Road was completed in fall 2015 under the first construction phase of the project. Lane restrictions had been in place on Interstate 290 since April 2016 for the second phase of the project which included the replacement of the westbound bridges.
Erie County Executive Marc C. Poloncarz said, "The replacement of the four Interstate 290 bridges that allow traffic to travel over Delaware Avenue and Military Road and the reconstruction of a portion of the I-290 in Tonawanda is part of a major commitment by the state in improving our region’s infrastructure. I want to thank Governor Cuomo for his commitment to improving and enhancing roadway safety for motorists and helping to assist in future economic growth here in Erie County."
The project was completed in accordance with the requirements of Governor Cuomo’s Drivers First Initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists and ensures that disruptions are kept at a minimum for drivers during highway and bridge projects across the state.
