Governor Cuomo announced that Patricia M. Groeber has been appointed First Deputy Superintendent of the New York State Police, which places her second in command of the 4,800 member Division. The appointment, made by Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico, marks the first time that a female member has been appointed to the position in the 98-year history of the State Police.

"First Deputy Superintendent Groeber is a proven leader in the finest traditions of the New York State Police," said Governor Cuomo. "I know she moves into her new position with the experience and dedication that's necessary to serve all New Yorkers. I congratulate Patricia Groeber on her appointment to this incredibly important post."

First Deputy Superintendent Groeber will oversee the daily operations of all aspects of the Division, including Field Command, Administration, Employee Relations and Internal Affairs. She first joined the State Police on September 22, 1986, as a Trooper in Troop G. She has served in numerous positions throughout career, and on May 4, 2013 was appointed Field Commander. In that position she was the first woman to ever serve as third in command of the Division, overseeing operations of the Uniform Force, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the New York State Intelligence Center and the Office of Counter Terrorism.

State Police Superintendent D'Amico said, "Patricia Groeber has been committed to protecting the people of New York for nearly 30 years. Her career has taken her to all corners of the state, rising through the ranks to be the first female to hold a number of leadership positions within the New York State Police. Today, we congratulate her latest achievement as she becomes First Deputy Superintendent. Her leadership and dedication to this agency will not only benefit the New York State Police, but also the people of this great state."

First Deputy Superintendent Groeber graduated in 1984 from the University of Albany with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Chemistry. She also holds a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Rockefeller College/University at Albany, and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Marist College. She is an active member of several outside organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.
