SNAP, Public Assistance, Emergency Assistance

September 20, 2021 - Governor Hochul announced assistance is available to help Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in New York City, Long Island and Westchester to replace food lost as a result of power outages and flooding caused by Hurricane Ida. Additionally, residents of those communities will be able to temporarily use their SNAP benefits to purchase hot and prepared foods.

Residents of New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties who think they may be eligible for replacement SNAP benefits must return a signed and completed form, to their county department of social services office or SNAP center in New York City by January 4, 2022. The application is also available in several other languages at https://otda.ny.gov/programs/applications/.

My Benefits is an online tool for New York State residents where they can check eligibility for multiple human services benefit programs and apply online for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and Temporary Assistance.

New York City residents may also apply through Access HRA.

You can also seek help in person at your local social services office during business hours for help paying for food, emergency housing, meeting basic needs or help with an emergency financial situation. Nonprofits Offering Assistance

September 26, 2021 - Governor Hochul and Mayor de Blasio announced $27 million is available to provide relief to undocumented survivors of the storms and flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida. This funding will be distributed through grants to an established network of community organizations and provided to New Yorkers who are not eligible to receive storm recovery assistance through the FEMA Individual Assistance Program or other means.

The following organizations will provide assistance:

The above partner organizations will begin providing assistance and accepting applications on Monday, September 27, 2021. The application period will close on April 29, 2022. In order to qualify for this program, the applicants must a) themselves not be eligible for FEMA assistance and b) not have an individual in their household who is eligible for assistance.

To get connected with assistance, impacted residents should call the ONA Hotline at 1-800-566-7636 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday or visit the partner not-for-profits. Hotline assistance is available in over 200 languages.

In general, local nonprofits are supporting disaster relief by offering food, aiding the homeless by providing essentials such as clothing, and offering temporary housing for individuals and families displaced.
