Overview

The “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” Scholarship provides a two-year scholarship to approximately 500 selected recipients covering tuition, room and board, and other related expenses in an approved program of study at any approved New York state public or private college or university (not to exceed the average cost of attendance at a state-operated SUNY or the winner’s actual cost of attendance, whichever is less) in these fields of study.


Approved Fields of Study

Registered Nurse

  • Associate degree in nursing
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing

Respiratory Therapist

  • Associate degree in respiratory care
  • Bachelor’s degree in respiratory care

Clinical Laboratory Technologist

  • Associate degree in medical laboratory technology
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, also known as a bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science

Radiologic Technology:

  • Associate degree in radiologic technology
  • Bachelor’s degree in radiological science

Surgical Technology:

  • Associate degree in surgical technology

The scholarship covers tuition, room and board and other non-tuition expenses including books, supplies and transportation at an approved New York state public or private college or university for up to two years of full-time study. The total award may not exceed the average cost of attendance at a state-operated SUNY or the winner’s actual cost of attendance, whichever is less.

Funds will be available for up to four semesters of full-time attendance and prorated for part-time students based on the number of credits.

Students with less than two years of study left to obtain their degree will be eligible to receive the scholarship from the time of receipt of the scholarship through the date on which they complete their degree. Students will not receive reimbursements for unused scholarships.

Only one valid entry will be accepted per participant. Duplicate entries will be removed prior to the drawing.


To Enter

From April 30, 2024, to June 24, 2024, at 11:59:59 p.m. EDT, eligible individuals may enter the “Healthcare Workers for Our Future" Scholarship drawing.

By successfully transmitting a completed online entry form, each participant will be entered into the drawing.


Eligibility

You are eligible to participate in the drawing if you meet the following requirements:

You currently live in New York State at the time of entering the contest and:

  • Matriculate in a degree-granting program in an Approved Field of Study and enroll full-time or part-time in an associate degree program at an approved New York State college or university by fall 2026;
  • Agree to live in New York State and to work in an approved field in a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in New York State for two years within twelve (12) months of graduation; and
  • Provide all required documentation to your school to determine eligibility for payment of the “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” Scholarship.

You currently live in New York State at the time of entering the contest and:

  • Have earned an associate degree in an Approved Field of Study by the end of the spring 2024 semester OR have at least sixty (60) credits in an Approved Field of Study by the end of the spring 2024 semester;
  • Matriculate in a degree-granting program in an Approved Field of Study and enroll full-time or part-time in a bachelor’s degree program at an approved New York State college or university by fall 2026;
  • Agree to live in New York State and to work in an approved field in a federally-designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in NYS for two years within twelve (12) months of graduation; and
  • Provide all required documentation to your school to determine eligibility for payment of the “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” Scholarship.

Lottery Selection and Validation Process

Approximately 500 prize winners will be selected from the pool of entrants in accordance with the following drawing announcement schedule:

Entries will be randomized, and winners will be selected from within the pool of eligible individuals who have submitted an entry form (“entrants”). The first 500 lottery results returned will be the prize winners, subject to verification. The order of the lottery results will be recorded and kept on file for audit purposes.

Each winner’s eligibility to receive the prize will be verified by New York State and the winner’s college prior to payment.

In the event that an entry is deemed invalid, a discrepancy is found, a winner cannot be located, refuses the prize, refuses to provide verification information, does not promptly respond to the initial contact by state officials, or is otherwise unwilling or unable to be verified, the winner will be removed from the prize group and the prize will be awarded to the next entrant in the order in which they were ranked until winners are verified.

The promptness and degree of reasonableness of efforts to locate a winner or of any decision to deem a winner ineligible based upon these rules shall be at the sole discretion of the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation.

No entries will be accepted after 11:59:59 p.m. June 24, 2024.


Notification

  1. The top winners will receive a notification requesting the submission of additional documentation to validate their eligibility to receive payment for the scholarship.
  2. Winners will be notified by email from [email protected] and/or by text message using the information that was provided in your entry form. If the email address or phone number you have provided are not valid at the time of the drawing, you will be unable to receive your award.
  3. Winners must confirm that they wish to claim the prize within ten business days of the notification and agree to provide the necessary documentation.
  4. To be eligible to win a prize, New York State must validate that the entrant is not or does not have a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, spouse, sibling, or other residing household member who is an employee of the NYS Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), NYS Department of Health (DOH), NYS Office of Information Technology Services (ITS), or the NYS Executive Chamber.
  5. Winners must attend an approved two- or four-year public or private college or university in New York State in order to claim the prize. If a winner chooses not to attend an approved New York State college or university, the prize will be forfeited.
  6. Winners must complete their degree within three (3) years if attending full-time in an approved program and within five (5) years of initial enrollment in an approved program if attending part-time or forfeit the remainder of the award.

Additional Terms and Conditions

  1. The “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” Scholarship and any prizes awarded thereunder are NOT A GUARANTEE OR ASSURANCE OF ADMISSION OR ENTRY into any college or university. Students must independently meet all requirements for admission and continued attendance at an institution, including but not limited to all academic performance requirements, degree program requirements, health requirements, and student conduct policies.
  2. By agreeing to participate in the program, entrants agree to authorize New York State to verify employment information with their employer, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYSDTF), or the New York State Department of Civil Service (NYSDCS), and agree to authorize their employer, NYSDTF or NYSDCS to disclose any information necessary to HESC for the purpose of verifying they are not an employee of a prohibited participating state entity.
  3. By agreeing to participate in the program, entrants agree that New York State and its entities may utilize and publish their name, likeness, and any other information submitted as part of the program for promotional or other purposes in perpetuity without further compensation.
  4. Individuals are responsible for the information submitted as part of this program. Entry submissions will include attestation of the accuracy of information under penalty of perjury.
  5. Recipients who received an award under the “Nurses for Our Future” (NFOF) Scholarship Program are eligible to enter for a chance to win a “Healthcare Workers for Our Future” (HWFOF) Scholarship. Winners of the HWFOF scholarship will forfeit any NFOF future winnings, which will be replaced with the HWFOF scholarship for the remaining time, not to exceed two years in total for both awards. HWFOF winners will be excused from having to complete the NFOF service agreement, but instead required to complete the HWFOF service agreement.
  6. Winners are responsible for any tax liability that may be incurred from receiving a prize under this program.
  7. Any attempt to undermine or manipulate the entry or prize drawing process will be met with prosecution under applicable law. Further, any individual found to have committed such an act at the discretion of HESC will be ineligible to receive a prize.
  8. Neither the State of New York, HESC, nor any of its employees or agents shall be responsible for late, inaccurate, lost, misdirected, or incomplete entries, regardless of the reason.
  9. Neither the State of New York, HESC, nor any of its employees or agents shall be responsible for the inaccessibility of the entry website or other means of entry or communication or for the incompatibility with the program website of any individual’s computer, internet connection or other technical hardware or software, regardless of the reason.
  10. Neither the State of New York, HESC, nor any of its employees or agents shall be responsible for any inaccurate, missing, or misinterpreted information in any program documents or communications.
  11. By accepting a prize, winners agree to hold New York State and its employees and agents harmless against all claims arising out of receipt of the prize.
  12. By participating in the program, all entrants agree to be bound by these Official Program Rules.
  13. Prizes are for the benefit of the winners only and are not transferrable to any other person.
  14. These rules may be revised at any time at the sole discretion of officials of the State of New York.
  15. The State of New York reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate, modify, or suspend the program.
