Governor Declares November 17th “National Guard Appreciation Day” in New York

Albany, NY (November 17, 2013)

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today attended a special ceremony for more than 150 New York Army National Guard Soldiers who were recognized for their service to the nation and New York at the Buffalo Bills game against the New York Jets, at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park. In addition, the Governor issued a proclamation declaring November 17th “National Guard Appreciation Day” in New York State.

“The men and women of the New York Army National Guard have served both their country and state with acts of selflessness and bravery that we are thankful for everyday,” said Governor Cuomo. “Today’s ceremony and proclamation is just one of the many ways we can show our appreciation for our Citizen Soldiers’ and the sacrifices they make on our behalf every day. It is an honor for me to participate in this special ceremony and I thank all of our troops for their commitment to protecting Americans and New Yorkers everywhere.”/p>

The Army National Guard Soldiers took part in the game’s opening ceremony, unfurling a giant American flag across the field prior to the playing of the National Anthem. Photos of today’s event can be viewed here.

During half-time Major General Patrick Murphy, the Adjutant General of New York, administered the oath of enlistment to the Soldiers in a reaffirmation ceremony. The Soldiers retook the oath and affirmed their membership in the New York Army National Guard.

Soldiers who enlist in the National Guard take a dual oath. Not only do they promise to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and obey the orders of the President of the United States, they also promise to support and defend the constitution of the State of New York.
