Summit Supports the Beverage Industry and Locally Produced Beer, Wine, Cider and Spirits

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation (HVEDC), in partnership with Taste NY, held its first regional Beer, Wine & Spirits Summit at the Culinary Institute of America to support the regional beverage industry and promote locally-produced beer, wine, cider and spirits sales and tourism. The event drew more than 200 industry representatives from throughout Hudson Valley. The HVEDC’s Food & Beverage Alliance organized a roundtable discussion focusing on the challenges and growth opportunities available in the industry specific to the Hudson Valley region following Governor Cuomo’s statewide summit held last October.
“New York’s wine, beer, and spirits industry is taking off, and events like this summit are key to continuing that progress,” Governor Cuomo said. “Just like the statewide Wine, Beer, and Spirits Summit that we held last year, today’s event brought together producers, community leaders, and economic development officials from throughout the Hudson Valley to identify ways to continue the growth of this important sector. Along with our initiatives like Taste NY, these efforts will help further the momentum in the industry and show that New York’s culinary products are some of the best in the world.”
State officials, economic development leaders and industry representatives in attendance provided information on the Taste NY initiative, expanding beverage trails, the state’s new One-Stop Shop and an update on state liquor regulations as well as the local wine industry.

Gottlieb, president and CEO of Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation. “Taste NY will be an incredible resource for our Food & Beverage Alliance members and everyone working in our region’s food and beverage industry who will have the ability to show off the excellent items we produce.”
The Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporations’ Food & Beverage Alliance hosted the summit to discuss ways to grow the already prosperous beverage industry into an even greater sector for the Hudson Valley. The event addressed a variety of topics, including exploring business-to-business needs, industry policies at the state and federal levels, workforce training and education initiatives including funding opportunities, access to capital through loan and grant programs, and networking.
“Thanks to the Governor’s leadership, and events like the State’s Wine, Beer and Spirits Summit, the beverage industry has seen a tremendous boost across the State,” said Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams. “New York State, through the Taste NY initiative, is pleased to co-host local events, such as the HVEDC Beer, Wine & Spirits Summit, to continue this momentum, and explore ways to grow the sector and promote the diversity of the Hudson Valley’s beverage companies.”
“New York’s craft manufacturers, often small family-owned businesses, have experienced an explosion of growth over the past three years under the Governor’s leadership,” said State Liquor Authority Chairman Dennis Rosen. “We are excited to participate in today’s summit to further assist these businesses as they continue to create jobs and environmentally friendly economic development across New York State.”
“As New York’s beverage industry continues to grow, New York agriculture grows with it,” said Acting State Agriculture Commissioner James B. Bays. “This Summit will take participants on a journey from where we were, where we are now under Governor Cuomo’s leadership, and where we’re headed. We’ve done a lot over the past three years and the future looks very bright for this rapidly growing industry.”
Since taking office, Governor Cuomo has worked to further support and develop the beverage industry, which is a major driver of job creation and economic development in communities across the state. In particular, under the Governor’s leadership, Upstate farms and agribusinesses have become key contributors in the industry’s growth. In addition to hosting the State’s first ever Wine, Beer and Spirits Summit in October 2012, where he announced plans for a new marketing campaign to promote New York-produced wine, beer, cider and spirits sales and tourism, as well as a series of regulatory reforms that will significantly reduce business costs for beverage producers, the Governor has introduced several new initiatives such as Taste NY to help improve the marketing of New York State products. The Governor’s innovative policy changes, including New York’s Farm Brewery license and recently passed Farm Cideries bill, are also helping to grow and expand this critical industry in New York State.
New York is now home to nearly 520 wineries, breweries, distilleries, and cideries. Producers account for more than $22 billion in annual total economic impact in the state and support tens of thousands of jobs statewide. The state ranks third in the nation in wine and grape production, has the second-most distilleries, and three of the top-producing 20 brewers in the United States are located in New York.
