Albany, NY (October 29, 2012)
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the Tappan Zee Bridge will close to all traffic at 4 PM Monday, October 29 due to weather conditions related to Hurricane Sandy.
“Hurricane Sandy has created conditions that make it hazardous for motorists to use the Tappan Zee, and that is why we are closing the bridge,” said Governor Cuomo. “We are sensitive to the impact this will have on travelers, but safety is our highest priority and, under current conditions, gusts sweeping across the bridge could flip vehicles or cause serious multi-vehicle accidents.”
There is an immediate ban on all trucks, buses, motorcycles on the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Although the bridge structure is safe and not in danger of failure or collapse, the bridge will remain closed until conditions indicate that it is again safe for traffic.
Southbound Tappan Zee Bridge traffic on the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) will be instructed to leave the roadway at or before exit 13, Palisades Interstate Parkway. Local traffic will be able to continue southbound to exits 12 (West Nyack) and 11 (Nyack, South Nyack).
Northbound bridge traffic will be instructed to leave the roadway at exit 8, I-287 Cross Westchester Expressway. Local traffic will be able to continue northbound to exit 9, Tarrytown.
Motorists will be advised regarding these alternate routes. Variable message systems and highway advisory radio system broadcasts will be activated to notify motorists. Blast email TRANSalerts will be sent to those who have signed up to receive them.
In addition, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the RFK Bridge are preparing to go into phase II wind restrictions.
