133 graduate from across New York State

Albany, NY (October 16, 2012)

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today addressed 133 new members of the State Police at the 198th session graduation ceremony from the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. This is the first State Police Academy graduation class since June 9, 2009, when 88 graduates left the Academy.

“The young men and women graduating today have answered the call to serve and protect the people of the state of New York,” said Governor Cuomo. “The members of the New York State police put their lives on the line every day to keep our state safe. I congratulate all the graduates and their families, and thank them for their dedication and service to New York.

“Today marks another significant moment in the proud history of the New York State Police,” said New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico. “The graduation ceremony is one of our finest traditions and introduces a new generation of highly trained men and women, who will serve the citizens of the State of New York with honor and integrity. I am proud to welcome these graduates to our ranks.”

In addition to honoring all graduates from the 198th Session of Basic School, Superintendent D’Amico presented the following awards:

  • Trooper Edward H. Fleming, 31, of Bronx, NY was elected as class representative. He will be assigned to Troop C.
  • The winner of the “Academic Performance Award” is Trooper Joshua I. Udell, age 30 of Altamont, NY. Throughout the Academy training program, he achieved an overall academic average of 97.07%. He will be assigned to Troop C.
  • The winner of the “Superintendent’s Firearms Proficiency Award” is Trooper Matthew W. Volpe, age 28, of Brockport, NY. During firearms training, he fired an average score of 250 out of a possible 250. He will be assigned to Troop C.
  • The winner of the “Joseph T. Aversa Physical Training Award” is Trooper Brandon M. Barcomb, age 29. During the physical agility testing, he achieved the highest score of all 133 members of the 198th Session, a tribute to his physical conditioning. He will be assigned to Troop F.

The graduation ceremonies were held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Hall in Albany where the new troopers marched into the convention center in a procession lead by the New York State Police Pipe and Drum band. The National Anthem was performed by Mrs. Laurel Michell-Regan of North Chatham, NY. The ceremonies included a video presentation of the training received by all members of the 198th Basic School Session. The new troopers will report for field duty on October 22, 2012, and for the following ten weeks will be evaluated under a field-training program supervised by senior Field Training Officers.
