Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Thursday, May 1st, 2014, in honor of a Fort Drum soldier from Accord, N.Y. who died in Afghanistan on April 28.
Sgt. Shawn M. Farrell II, died in Nejrab District, Kapisa Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire while on dismounted patrol. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team.
“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I extend my deepest sympathy to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sgt. Shawn Farrell,” Governor Cuomo said. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of this young man, who served our state and nation with honor. We will remember his service with pride."
Governor Cuomo has directed that the flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in honor of and in tribute to our state's service members and those stationed in New York who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
