Albany, NY (April 9, 2012)
State government is actively monitoring the brush fires in Suffolk County, as well as the fire situations on Staten Island and in Rockland County. I have directed state emergency response agencies to coordinate with local authorities in order to contain the fires and help protect New Yorkers and their property. I have placed the National Guard fire team in Suffolk County on standby to be ready to support firefighting efforts. The National Guard has helicopter and other air based fire suppression equipment deployed in the area and ready to be activated if needed. There are also Emergency Management, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, State Police, and Department of Environmental Conservation officials on site conducting active land based and aerial surveillance. We will continue to monitor the situation through the evening and deploy whatever resources and take whatever action necessary to contain the fires.
