As the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy approaches, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is deploying the Department of Financial Services (DFS) Mobile Command Center (MCC) to provide continued assistance to homeowners and businesses impacted by the storm. DFS representatives will be available next week in New York City and on Long Island to provide help related to insurance claims, mortgage relief, and other issues.
Weve made significant progress rebuilding after the terrible damage inflicted by Superstorm Sandy, but theres still more work ahead, said Governor Cuomo. We will continue reaching out to help those New Yorkers that are still facing challenges repairing their homes and lives in the wake of this devastating natural disaster. New York State will continue delivering assistance to impacted families and businesses until the job is done.
Benjamin M. Lawsky, Superintendent of Financial Services, said, While many insurance claims related to Superstorm Sandy have already been resolved, those that remain are among the most difficult cases. Governor Cuomo deployed us on the ground to continue doing everything we can to provide direct help to New York homeowners and businesses rebuilding after the storm.
DFS representatives will be available next week to meet with residents inside the Departments Mobile Command Center, which will be stationed at the following locations on the following dates between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.:

Impacted families and business are also urged to call the DFS Disaster Hotline for assistance at 1-800-339-1759, which is available each week Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
As of October 2013, more than 98 percent of the approximately 500,000 non-flood insurance claims in Sandy-affected New York areas have been resolved with more than $5 billion in claims paid. However, those claims that remain outstanding are often the most difficult or challenging cases. DFS can provide assistance to impacted New Yorkers in dealing with their insurance company. Additionally, DFS has helped establish a voluntary mediation process for homeowners and businesses disputing their insurance claims or those that are dissatisfied with denials of their claims arising from Sandy. Homeowners should note, however, that flood damage is generally only covered by flood insurance, which is a federal program administered by FEMA. DFS representatives can offer advice and guidance for New Yorkers in contacting the federal flood insurance program related to those claims.
DFS can also assist impacted homeowners with issues related to their mortgages. In particular, some families may have reached or are nearing the end of a mortgage forbearance that they received after the storm. DFS can assist homeowners in dealing with their bank or mortgage servicer on that issue, including potential options for mortgage modifications.
Homeowners or businesses unable to resolve disputes with their financial institution can contact DFS to file a complaint at 1-800-342-3736 or at the DFS website. Additionally, DFS has also released a list of its Top 50 Storm Preparedness Tips to help ensure that New Yorkers are better equipped to protect against the potential damage that future storms can cause.
