Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the opening of the first Taste NY store in New Yorks LaGuardia Airport at Delta Air Lines Terminal C, another major step towards making New Yorks finest food and beverages available to consumers around the world. Brooklyn Oenology, a winery based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, will operate the store in space leased from the airports concessionaire, OTG. Taste NY is Governor Cuomos program to raise the profiles and sales of New York food and beverage makers.
New York State is home to some of the best food and beverage producers in the world and these new Taste NY locations will help introduce them to millions of travelers each year, Governor Cuomo said. Highlighting our leading culinary brands is an important way to support tourism and agriculture in communities across the state, and ultimately spread the word about the world-class products that New York has to offer."
Brooklyn Oenology is a farm winery that produces wines from New York State grapes. In addition to the new LaGuardia Taste NY location, it operates a Taste NY store at Delta Air Lines Terminal 2 of John F. Kennedy International Airport, which also opened today. It is able to operate both stores as a result of changes signed into law by Governor Cuomo in the Fine Winery Bill of 2011, which allows a farm winery to operate up to five branch office stores in addition to the farm winery. Both the LaGuardia and JFK Taste NY stores carry nearly 200 food and beverage products that will rotate over time.
Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy participated in todays ribbon cutting ceremony for the new LaGuardia store and noted that Taste NYs presence at the New York State Fair, PGA Championship, and other major events had also exposed people to New York products.
Now, some of the best products grown and made in New York are available anytime, Lieutenant Governor Robert J. Duffy said. More than 25 million people passed through LaGuardia in 2012, for work, or family, or tourism. Also, more than 11 thousand people work here. Thats a massive audience for the great products of Taste New York.
In addition to the Taste NY stores at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, there is also a Taste NY store at McArthur Airport in Islip and a display at Buffalo-Niagara Airport. Other Taste NY stores are scheduled to open in 2014 in New York airports, train stations, and transportation hubs.
Delta Senior Vice President Gail Grimmett said, As New York States largest airline we love connecting New Yorkers to the world and bringing the world to New York. With Taste NY now open in Delta terminals at LaGuardia and JFK were proud to help share with the world some of the finest products that New York has to offer from around the state.
Brooklyn Oenology owner/winemaker Alie Shaper said, From the start, Brooklyn Oenology Winery has been focused on working with vineyards from all around New York State to produce our award-winning B.O.E. wines, and passionate about presenting other first-class New York wines, spirits, ciders, beers, and food products at our Tasting Room in Williamsburg. With the strong support of Governor Cuomos extraordinary Taste NY program, and our excellent collaboration with OTG, were excited to share our enthusiasm for a curated selection of New Yorks fantastic products with the many thousands of local, national and international travelers who pass through New York Citys airports every day.
OTG CEO Rick Blatstein said, Were thrilled to be a part of the Governors Taste NY initiative and are committed to providing a showcase for the States best products in the first Taste NY store, which opened today. With stores like this, and concepts like our newly opened Wibar at LaGuardias Delta Terminal C, where local vintages have been hand selected by Master Sommelier Roger Dagorn, customers can experience the very best of the state. Our New York wines are selling better than ever, from the North Fork of Long Island to the Finger Lakes and beyond.
Governor Cuomos Taste NY initiative focuses on branding and expanding New York's food and beverage industry by making the wide variety of foods and beverages made and grown in the state readily available and recognizable to New Yorkers as well as to the hospitality industry and general public. Part of Governor Cuomos efforts to promote agribusiness across the state, Taste NY is being marketed through a range of promotional efforts including Taste NY tents at important events, Taste NY stores in transportation hubs and a dedicated website, www.taste.ny.gov.
