Number of Winter Markets Tripled Since 2007-2008 in New York
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that winter farmers’ markets in New York have again reached an all-time high, now with 120 markets located across the state. While the selection of goods during the warmer seasons is higher, winter markets offer consumers plenty of New York-made choices, including potatoes, onions, cabbages, apples, meat and dairy products, honeys, maple syrups, high tunnel greens, carrots, wines and parsnips. “Buying New York products helps New York farmers, and strengthens this state’s agriculture industry – something that becomes even more important in the winter months,” Governor Cuomo said. "I encourage all New Yorkers to find a winter farmers' market and plan a visit.”
The number of winter farmers markets in New York State has grown 198 percent since the 2007 season.
· 2007-2008 season: 40 winter markets
· 2008-2009 season: 60 winter markets
· 2009 -2010 and 2010-2011 seasons: 87 winter markets
· 2011-2012 season: 94 winter markets
· 2012-2013 season: 110 winter markets
· 2013-2014 season: 116 winter markets
· 2014-2015 season: 120 winter markets
State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball said, “More and more consumers are embracing New York agriculture as a year-round business, which is tremendously beneficial to our farmers and producers. Through initiatives such as the Governor’s Taste NY program as well as winter farmers’ markets, it is now easier than ever for New Yorkers to support this huge sector of the economy.”
