Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that 34 Taste NY craft distillers are participating in the Manhattan Cocktail Classics Opening Day Gala on May 9 at the New York Public Library. This is the second straight year that Taste NY has sponsored the NYS Distillery room at the Gala. At last years event, a number of Taste NY distillers reported a boost in sales and consumer awareness as a result of their participation.
The Manhattan Cocktail Classic is one of the spirit industrys premier events, and with the States support, 34 of New Yorks finest distilleries are taking center stage at the Classics opening gala, Governor Cuomo said. By helping our local producers participate in this international showcase, we are raising the profile of New Yorks craft spirits industry and supporting jobs and economic activity in communities across the State. I am proud to see our local distillers participating in this renowned event, and encourage all of the Classics attendees to taste the tremendous spirits that New York has to offer.
Nicole Austin, President of the New York State Distillers Guild, said, Thanks to the support of Governor Cuomo and Taste NY, New York State distillers have the opportunity to display their innovation and quality right alongside big brands who have dominated the market for years. The Manhattan Cocktail Classic Gala is an incredible opportunity for New York State Distillers, allowing us to reach new consumers and grow all of our businesses.
Danielle Eddy, Director of Marketing and Sales for Hillrock Estate Distillery in Ancram, New York said, This is our second year participating in the Manhattan Cocktail Classic thanks to Taste NY. This is the premier event to expose influential people in New York to our world class products. Through our participation in the event last year, we were able to nearly sell out a new release of single malt whiskey before it even hit the market. This year, we have yet another new release to showcase at the event and were hopeful to have similar results.
At the Manhattan Cocktail Classic, craft distilleries from across New York State will pour their handcrafted beverages at the prestigious black-tie cocktail event that attracts more than 3,000 cocktail enthusiasts annually, including members of the media and representatives of the restaurant industry. Distilleries in New York State have risen 200 percent since 2011, from 29 that year to 87 today. This includes 37 new Farm Distilleries opening across the state since 2011. New York now has more distilleries than any state east of the Mississippi River.
Richard A. Ball, Commissioner of the Department of Agriculture and Markets, said, As distilleries continue to pop up here in New York, its only natural that new opportunities arise for the states agricultural economy as well. Taste NYs participation in the Manhattan Cocktail Classic is about exposing our states first class craft distilleries to the masses. As our farm-based beverage industry continues to grow, new jobs are created within agriculture and other industries to support this growing sector of New Yorks economy.
Empire State Development President, CEO & Commissioner Kenneth Adams said, The Manhattan Cocktail Classic is the perfect stage to showcase New York States world-class distilleries. Participation at the Classic last year was a tremendous success with producers from across New York from Western New York to the Adirondacks to Brooklyn converging under the New York State banner to promote their products and the states growing beverage industry. With the Governors leadership and support, New York State is creating an environment for businesses to succeed and grow.
