Statement From Governor David A. Paterson on Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 17, 2010

"As we observe the 25th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to take the opportunity to highlight the protections our State has guaranteed in detecting and combating this disease.

"New York law requires that health insurance cover mammograms at any age when recommended by a doctor for women who have a prior history of breast cancer or whose mother or sister has a prior history of breast cancer. Additionally, our State mandates that insurance cover a mammogram every two years, or more frequently if a doctor recommends, for women aged forty to forty-nine and an annual mammogram for women aged fifty and older.

"Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers found in women in the United States and raising awareness about and combating this life threatening disease must remain a priority. I urge all New Yorkers to continue consulting with their physicians about their personal needs for mammograms and other medical tests."
